OUGD301 - Evaluation.

This has definitely been a stressful and challenging module, but also one I have gained a lot from.

I got out of this module what I wanted to in terms of my rationale. The briefs I completed were relevant to my practice and allowed me to create pieces of work in the areas that I intend to specialise in. I feel I've got a good selection of branding projects which was my main aim, as well as some editorial work that I'm really happy with.

I didn't complete 2 of the briefs I set out to do. Some briefs turned out to be a lot bigger than I originally intended, which resulted in not having the time to do them. I am quite disappointed about this, but I feel that I still have an amount of work that shows the time we've spent on this module. Maybe these briefs will form part of my FMP next year.

Having quick turnaround briefs throughout this module was definitely a good idea. I was impressed at what could be achieved in such a short period of time. It also forced me to make quick decisions which I then brought forward into my more substantial briefs.

It was great to experience working for a client with the digital milk round brief, even if it was a bad experience at that. It was frustrating at times, especially since Bridget obviously had in mind what she wanted from the beginning but left it open. I'm not happy with the designs, I don't particularly like them and it isn't the style of work that I would normally produce. This was the reason I decided to do live briefs though, so that I could experience the restrictions.

Time management has definitely been an issue, I had a bad start and it made a big impact on the rest of the module. I struggled working on more than one brief at a time. When I was enjoying working on a brief, I found myself making that brief priority and ended up not sticking to my set timetables. When I had set myself deadlines for briefs, I didn't stick to it for some of them, especially the Anthony Rimmer branding brief. This was the first brief I started and was also the last brief I finished. I just couldn't get it to something I was happy with it, and even now i'm not. It was the branding brief I spent the most time on and also my least favourite. I won't be letting another brief go on for that amount of time again.

I was on top of my practice blog throughout, but my context blog lagged behind a little. It wasn't because I wasn't looking, I just got into the habit of saving images and not putting them up on my blog as soon as I'd found them. Again, something that will keep in mind for the next module.

Overall, a fairly successful module. I've enjoyed it and come out of it with a few portfolio pieces that I am happy with and feel represents me as a designer.

Final crit feedback.

Feedback for boards:

- layouts are good - clear
- add page numbers
- how mag doesn't need as many layout shots
- logos for each project - good idea
- maybe add specs for fonts, colour, stock etc
- expand on written parts
- add brief to impact board
- vectorise typeface on how mag impact board rather than have the photo
- strong photography
- adjust spacing between images
- consider adjusting gutter size

Action Plan:

- Create new impact board with just logo and briefs
- Add page numbers to boards
- Re photograph 3 of the branding briefs
- Add in vector typeface instead of photograph of posters
- Decide which projects to hand in - does this effect whats on my boards?

Questions for final crit.

Are the boards communicating the projects clearly?

I've gone for a high impact image for the first boards, should I be telling the story instead?

Any suggestions of other images I should be including?

Feel free to write on the boards.
Not all boards are finished. The How magazine boards are, the branding and live briefs are also.

Time sheets - W/C 6th Dec

Keep adding to this as the weeks going on so will put up another at the end of the week.

Questions for crit.

Just to explain, the A3 sheets set out at the top are the more recent ones.

Branding
- AR - I'm unsure whether to go for the bold logo or the slightly more delicate one. The bold one suits the client more but the delicate one gives a better representation of the architectural drawings. Which logo do you prefer?
- Any general feedback for all branding briefs? I know I have yet to experiment with stock and printing processes, just want to make sure the designs are right before I spend loads.

How Magazine
- Do you think the logo is working? I like the typeface but something seems to be missing with the logo. Any suggestions?
- Which cover layout do you think is working the best? Obviously none are finished yet.

Tutorial with Fred.

What time have I got left?

Just a rough timescale for my briefs based on where I'm at now.

- Finish AR, Great, Print Resolutions and BSM branding briefs
- Create something with the developed typeface
- 1 day branding brief - Friday

W/C 8th Nov
- Have all branding briefs finished and printed
- Come to a final resolution for the How Magazine, including the page spreads

W/C 15th Nov
- Have HOW magazine finished, printed and photographed

W/C 22nd Nov
- Live D&AD brief - 2-3 day brief
- Continue with exhibition brief - signage, information booklet etc

W/C 29th Nov
- LCA Logo - 2 day brief
- Website & prospectus proposals - 3 day brief

W/C 6th Dec
- Finalise exhibition brief

Wednesday 15th - Module Submission

Timesheet - W/C 1st Nov

Questions for crit.

Do you think the 'g' logo for the great brief is suitable for an agency that specialises in branding?

Although my client is happy with the AR logo, something doesn't seem complete. Can you spot any issues?

Really struggling to think of some questions, any general feedback on logos, colour, layouts would be great.

Please note the front of the Print Resolutions business card is meant to be spot varnished.

How Magazine Live Brief.

This is one of the live briefs I have decided to have a go at.

Founded in 1985, HOW Magazine provides graphic-design professionals with essential business information, covers new technology and processes, profiles renowned and up-and-coming designers, details noteworthy projects, and provides creative inspiration.

HOW Magazine is now accepting entries in it’s annual Logo Design Awards. It doesn’t matter if your logo was created for yourself, for work or just for fun…we want to see what you can do! So take this wide-open media and run with it.

Eligibility

Work must have been created between November 1, 2009 and October 31, 2010. Each entry is $40.

Prize

10 winners will be featured on the HOW website, get $150 worth of HOW books and receive a 1 year subscription to HOW magazine.

You will also receive a graphic to post on your website announcing your winning status.

You can find it here: http://graphiccompetitions.com/graphic-design/how-magazine-logo-design-awards/

Though I will re-design the logo and submit it, I have extended it so that I will also be designing the cover and 3 page spreads for the magazine. I felt this was a good opportunity to to get some editorial work for my portfolio.

1st tutorial.

Went really well. No major issues were raised other than the LCA logo and website brief. It was said that this was maybe a little too big of a project to take on and to maybe look into choosing a smaller subject.

Other than that they seemed to agree that the briefs correspond with my umbrella statement and will allow me to get the work I need for my portfolio.

Proposal.
